| Abstrak |
Background. Patients using removable orthodontic appliance have bigger risk of having dental plaque. Steptococcus mutans as the dental plaque precursor that can be the dominant factor for dental caries formation will be easier to make colonies because of the foods leftover at the teeth with clasp. Black tea contains of polyphenol, which is catechin that has anticariogenic potential. Purpose. The aim of this study was to know the effect of using black tea as gargle and the decrease of S. mutans colonization in patient using removable orthodontic appliance. Method. This research was using 20 saliva samples from patients with removable orthodontic appliance for one year, between ages 8-12 years. 10 samples were the saliva before they gargle with 25% black tea and 10 samples were after they gargle with 25% black tea for about 2 minutes. Then, S. mutans colonization on each samples were counted. Results. There were significant differences (p<0.05) of the quantity of S. mutans's colonies in patients using removable orthodontic appliance before and after they gargle with 25% black tea. Conclusion. Gargling with 25% black tea decrease the colonies of S. mutans in patient using removable orthodontic appliance. |
