UNAIR Law students win second place in international scientific competition Saturday, 20 May 2023 23:55

UNAIR NEWS – A team from the Faculty of Law (FH) Universitas Airlangga won second place in the International Scientific Competition held by Universitas Islam Lamongan. The team leader Angelica Milano Aryani Wibisono, Muhammad Akmal Syawal (second-year students), and Ridho Budaya Septarianto (fourth-year student) explored the environmental issue for the topic.

It was an outstanding achievement for Akmal and his team, considering they had beaten the other 50 teams in the competition.

The team started with registration until they beat the competitors in the second stage. In the end, the team was listed in the top 10 for the presentation stage.

“We’re proud and happy with the achievement. However, it does not stop us from finding and developing our potential,” he said.

Exploring carbon tax

The team explored the problem of carbon distribution, which increases and leads to global warming. Therefore, a profit-oriented environmental policy by circulating a green economy is highly required, for instance, implementing carbon taxes.

“The tax will have positive impacts on the environment and provide green economy incomes to the state,” Akmal said.

Strengthening the mechanism basis

The current carbon tax regulation does not have the most suitable mechanism yet. Akmal and his team formulated the innovations as the framework. Further, the government and stakeholders’ actions will make an important part in the tax carbon implementation.

“Hopefully, the mechanism we offer will set the framework to formulate the policy,” he said.

Research and presentation conducted from home

The two-week preparation has become an impressive experience to take UNAIR to second place in the international competition. They also faced several challenges, like research and networking. However, they handled it well.

“The challenge was during research. Plus, the low network during the research and presentation, as those conducted from our home,” Akmal said.

He suggested students never give up on pursuing the field they are interested in. Furthermore, every effort must be followed with prayers to God for giving the best result.

“Keep up the spirit, don’t let the insecurity gets the best of you. Keep trying in other competition that suits your interest. Efforts and prayers must be continuously made, hoping to get the expected result,” he said.
