UNAIR NEWS – Universitas Airlangga provides extensive opportunities for students to study anywhere, both domestically and abroad. This time, Nadia Balqis Azzhara, a student at the Faculty of Law (FH) UNAIR got the learning opportunity at the University of Padua, Italy, through the Indonesian International Student Mobility Award (IISMA).

Nadia’s language constraint in Italian did not discourage her from choosing Italy as her country destination. She chose the University of Padua and took English in Intercultural Settings, Psychology of Individual Differences, and Work and Organizational Psychology.

Different education system

The education system between Italy and Indonesia is different. The lecturers appreciate students who are unafraid to engage in discussions, including international students like her actively.

“Sometimes I had a hard time [in listening to them], their English accent is difficult to understand. It encourages me not to give up,” Nadia said.

Dissemination with the locals

During her stay in Italy, Nadia not only gained knowledge but also socialized with local residents through Challenges Indonesia Day Out. They teach the locals to make batik with canting, wear batik, taste traditional food and play traditional games.

“I’m surprised by their high enthusiasm. They loved Indomie (instant noodles) and learned to make batik enthusiastically. It’s unforgettable,” she said.

Unique memories in Italy

Being a Muslim in a country with a non-Muslim majority is challenging. Mosques in Europe are very difficult to reach. Nadia had to go to the changing rooms in a department store to perform her prayers while traveling in Italy.

On the other hand, Europe countries provide responsive healthcare facilities. While traveling to Milan, she had a food allergy and had to be taken to the nearest hospital.

“The health workers were really skillful, they immediately helped me to call an ambulance and treated my allergy for free. I was surprised, I thought I have to pay and overthink because European medical expenses are expensive,” she said.

Ultimately, she advised the prospective awardees of IISMA 2023 to have the courage to try and not focus on the outcome. Do your utmost.
