UNAIR Webometrics Excellence ranked 2nd in Indonesia Tuesday, 15 August 2023 10:45

UNAIR NEWS – Universitas Airlangga (UNAIR) has managed to maintain its position in the Top 5 of best Indonesian universities based on Webometrics ranking. In the ranking published every six months, in July 2023 Edition, UNAIR is ranked fifth in Indonesian and 865th globally.

What are the indicators?
In this edition, UNAIR excelled in the Excellence indicator and placed second in Indonesia. UNAIR global rank showed improvement from 990th to 865th. Webometrics uses three indicators: Impact, which is weighted 50 percent, Openness weighted 10 percent, and Excellence weighted 40 percent. As per indicator, UNAIR is ranked 909th for Impact, 1032nd for Openness, and 1231st for Excellence, globally. Webometrics is the largest international academic ranking system for website ratings and research publications of higher education institutions.

Five other universities in Indonesia in the Top 10 after UNAIR are IPB University (911th), UNS Surakarta (1037th), Universitas Diponegoro (1156th), Institut Teknologi Sepuluh Nopember (1163rd), dan Universitas Hasanuddin (1231st).

Excellence
UNAIR’s Excellence rank leaps by 187 places from the previous ranking in January 2023, and UNAIR was second place for Excellence after Universitas Indonesia. The assessment of Excellence indicator is from the number of scientific publications, papers indexed by Scimago.

On this indicator, Director of Information Systems and Digitalization (DSID) UNAIR Yunus Abdul Halim SSi MKom said Excellence rank was improved because UNAIR started to clean up broken links that only display error-filled text on the pages. “So UNAIR has shut down inactive sites. We have completely shut down from more than 1,000 to 600 sites; otherwise, there will be opportunities for other dangerous links to enter,” he explained.

Impact
Furthermore, the impact rank is assessed based on the number (backlinks/domain referrals) of websites. The more links or UNAIR website links on other websites, the better the impact rank. “Not only research, but all scripts on the Web. The improvement in the impact indicator was significant from 1023 to 909. It cannot be separated from the strategy of the Center for Communications and Public Information (PKIP) which consistently publishes news until it is published in foreign media,” explained Yunus.

Openness
The Openness indicator is based on the number of citations from lecturer journal articles based on Google Scholar. “For example, students write a thesis and provide access to the public. It becomes a treasure that improves Openness,” he said. In this case, Yunus emphasized that in order to improve UNAIR’s global reputation, consolidation and collaboration with various parties is needed through the digitalization process,“ he said.

He believes that in four more years, UNAIR can achieve its target among the 123 best universities in the world and the 3 best in Indonesia. Hopefully this achievement will continue to encourage all teams to improve the achievement of Webometrics indicators. (*)

Every year, UNAIR participates in many higher education rankings, both national and international. Thus, webometrics ranking is not the only assessment of higher education in determining the quality of education.
