UNAIR NEWS - Emphasizing the importance of career planning to students of the Faculty of Economics and Business (FEB) Universitas Airlangga, the External Relations Department of BEM FEB UNAIR invited outstanding alumni at Sambang Alumni 2.0 last Monday (25/9/2023). The theme this time was Career Planning: One Step Forward to Achieve an Excellent Career Path.

The alumni visit (Sambang Alumni) presented Deddy Firman Rahmady, an alumnus of FEB UNAIR who graduated in 2009. Currently, he is the Vice President of Petrokimia Gresik Budget. Previously, he also held the position of Director of Asean Potash Chaiyaphum Co. 

Hans Michael Hartojo, one of the best graduates of FEB UNAIR 2021, also attended the event. Hans' latest position is Emerging Business Relationship Manager at Bank OCBC NISP Malang branch. Hans has also taken OCBC NISP's flagship On-the-job Trainee program, the Graduate Development Program.

 Building a Vision Since College

When asked whether Hans and Deddy had a career plan during college, both gave almost the same answer. Deddy emphasized that students must choose what kind of career path they will take. He also encouraged students to be selective in choosing a career and not just follow the crowd.

"The main mistake of fresh graduates is to have the mindset of 'the important thing is to work first'," said Deddy.

Adding to Deddy's answer, Hans leaned towards creating a backup career interest plan. He encourages students to choose alternative career paths that they are most interested in in case they cannot fulfill their main interests.

"Furthermore, you have to be consistent with those choices, don't switch to something else," Hans explained.

Vision Realization Tips

Because it is not as easy as it looks, Hans and Deddy shared tips for realizing career plans. Deddy explained that students must know their interests first to be able to determine their strengths. Deddy also encouraged students to look for as many opportunities as possible and create self-branding.

Hans once again agreed with Deddy while adding tips to build as many relationships as possible. Hans also emphasized prioritizing building relationships with people who have similar interests.

"It will be easier (to realize career plans, ed) if you are surrounded by people who are on the same frequency," said Hans. (*)
