Fishery Product Technology Study Program Has 4 Advantages Friday, 08 March 2024 11:04

UNAIR NEWS - As a campus located in a coastal city, Universitas Airlangga has a study program that focuses on the maritime sector. In 2014, Fishery Product Technology Study Program or formerly named Fishery Product Industrial Technology was officially born based on Decree No. 2081/UN3/2014, dated October 7, 2014.

Dr Rr Juni Triastuti SPi MSi as the Head of UNAIR Fishery Product Technology (THP) Study Program revealed that the study program must have advantages, characteristics, and be able to answer challenges in society. THP study program at UNAIR is no exception, Dr. Juni explained that THP UNAIR has 4 advantages.

"The first is fishery product processing, then functional or nutraceutical food, food safety, and downstreaming in industry. These four things are reflected in the courses in THP UNAIR," she said.

Interestingly, he explained, THP UNAIR students also study entrepreneurship courses as a supporting competency. "Where students must produce products, and they must be sold. Some make beauty lotions, makeup, and disinfectants," explained Dr. Juni.

 

Regarding accreditation, the lecturer who has expertise in aquaculture and fish physiology said that until now THP UNAIR is still accredited B. However, this is inseparable from the background of this study program which was only established in 2014.

"In 2024, we are preparing for re-accreditation," said Dr. Juni.

Dr. Juni also explained that actually in 2024, his department was asked for ASIIN international accreditation or Accreditation in Engineering Computer Sciences Natural Sciences Mathematics. "We are organizing slowly. In the process, we have to reach a certain level first," he explained.

 

Alumni Prospects
When asked about the prospects of THP UNAIR alumni, he explained that THP alumni can work in private and state institutions. "Both private and public, alumni usually (work) related to fishery product processing and food safety," he explained.

THP UNAIR graduates also have the ability to become managers, entrepreneurs, lecturers, and researchers. Dr. Juni also mentioned that THP graduates are needed in various lines. Therefore, FPK provides competency tests from the National Professional Certification Agency (BNSP) to ensure the quality of graduates.

"Students realize the importance of the certification. The competency test is often assisted by the Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries (KKP) and DPKKA UNAIR," said Dr. Juni.

At the end, Dr. Juni also said that THP is not only limited to processing fish into food. "The potential of fisheries is very large, not just food. All human needs are actually related to THP," he explained.

Dr. Juni also said that THP regularly improves the curriculum to respond to challenges in society and industry, both local and global or international. "We hope that students who graduate as graduates of Fishery Product Technology will be able to answer these challenges," he concluded.
