DPKKA Holds Webinar on Post-Campus World Preparation Friday, 02 August 2024 09:47

UNAIR NEWS - Directorate of Career Development, Entrepreneurship Incubation, and Alumni (DPKKA) Universitas Airlangga (NAIR) held Airlangga Career and Internship Club (ACIC) on Thursday, July 25, 2020. The event carried the theme of "Navigating Life After College" or preparation for the post-college world. Organized online through Zoom Meeting, the webinar was attended by two speakers, namely Hiromi Jorge MT and Hiroko Amanda MPsi Psychologist.

Hiroko said, based on data in the field, Generation Z tends to have more difficulty in finding a job. Moreover, currently 12 percent of unemployment in Indonesia is dominated by undergraduate and diploma graduates. "When looking at the current condition of our country, we can say that finding a job has become much more difficult," explained Hiroko.

Three Factors
The difficulty in finding a job can be caused by at least three factors, namely technological disruption, economic challenges, and identifying skill gaps. Technological disruption has caused many jobs that usually require humans to be replaced by machines, for example in terms of administration. "Technology, which in this context is artificial intelligence (AI), causes a reduction in labor and automatically makes competition tighter," Hiroko added.

The second factor is economic challenges. Since COVID-19 hit the world a few years ago, many companies have become more selective in selecting their workers. "Since COVID-19 hit, companies have to reduce costs to maintain their sustainability. The easiest way is to reduce less productive human resources," he explained.

The last factor is to identify skill gaps. Hiroko shared her experience as an HRD that companies place great importance on soft skills. Many Gen Zs today complain that they have a high cumulative grade point average (GPA) but can't find a job.

"In the working world, collaboration skills, problem-solving skills, and emotional intelligence are needed. GPA is indeed an administrative requirement, but if you do not have adequate soft skills, you will certainly be eliminated in the world of work," he said.

Determining Life's Direction
Hiromi explains that in determining the direction of life, she uses a Japanese philosophy of life called Ikigai. The word Ikigai literally comes from the words "iki" which means life and "gai" which means value, so Ikigai means a reason to live. "Ikigai can be one of the answers to making your life meaningful by understanding the concept," Hiromi explains.

Basically, Ikigai is the intersection of four elements: passion, mission, vocation, and profession. In finding Ikigai, the most important thing is to balance these four elements to complement each other in forming a sustainable life purpose.

"Passion means something we enjoy, mission is things that are needed in our environment, vocation is something that generates income, and profession is something we feel we are good at," Hiromi concluded.
