UNAIR dental students propose AI and AR-integrated implant placement innovation Wednesday, 09 October 2024 16:14

UNAIR NEWS – Students from the Faculty of Dental Medicine (FKG) Universitas Airlangga (UNAIR) have once again achieved notable international success. A team consisting of Jesslyn Samantha, Felice Kanaya Chandra, and Davinzo Luis Gunardy, emerged victorious in the 15th Dentistry Scientific Festival, held at Brawijaya University on Wednesday, September 28, 2024.

They secured first place in the international literature review category under the guidance of their mentor, Drg. Ramadhan Hardani Putra, MKes, PhD.

Advancement in implant placement technology
Samantha and her team presented a paper titled “Enhancing Navigation through Cone-Beam Computer Tomography with Artificial Intelligence and Augmented Reality to Prevent Dental Implant Improper Placement.” According to Samantha, the topic was chosen due to the frequent errors encountered in implant placements.

“That’s why we focused on integrating CBCT (Cone-Beam Computed Tomography) with AI and AR to assist in segmentation and virtual reality,” Samantha explained on behalf of the team. “This innovation aims to help dentists perform implant placements with greater precision and fewer errors.”

Experiences and challenges
Samantha also shared that participating in the competition was a great opportunity to build connections, especially with dental students from other universities. “The fun part was visiting Brawijaya University, so that was enjoyable,” she said. However, alongside the positive experiences, Samantha and her team also faced significant challenges during the competition.

As dental students, they were still required to attend classes, and the intensive nature of their clinical practices posed additional hurdles. “We had other activities, too, so discussions about our paper often went on until dawn, frequently,” Samantha shared.

Despite the hurdles, the team expressed gratitude for the chance to compete internationally. They highlighted that, beyond the competition, they gained valuable academic skills. “We learned how to write a good paper, search for journals, create effective PowerPoint presentations, and deliver presentations,” she concluded.
