UNAIR students win Gold at IID 2024 with Terra Smart Patch innovation Thursday, 17 October 2024 13:27

UNAIR NEWS – Students from Universitas Airlangga (UNAIR) have once again achieved remarkable success. This time, the achievement comes from a group of UNAIR students, Terra Team. They won a gold medal at the Indonesia Investor Day 2024, held in Bali on Saturday, August 31, 2024.

Terra Team employed a multidisciplinary approach to develop their innovation. The team consists of students from various faculties: Putri Mardhotillah (Faculty of Fisheries and Marine Sciences), Arinda Melina Putri (Faculty of Fisheries and Marine Sciences), Galih Satrio Jati (Faculty of Advanced Technology and Multidiscipline), Yeremia Budi Cristian (Faculty of Advanced Technology and Multidiscipline), Claudia Benita (Faculty of Public Health), Catherine Harijanto (Faculty of Economics and Business), and Grae Amaranusa (Faculty of Social and Political Sciences). These six students introduced an innovative product named Terra Smart Patch.

Terra Team clinched the gold medal by outperforming over 400 entries from 25 countries. Putri, a representative of Terra Team, expressed her joy at their achievement. “It is an honor and a great privilege to participate in the International Indonesia Inventors Day (IID) 2024. It was an extraordinary experience and a challenging journey for Terra Team,” she stated.

The innovation focuses on the issues of food waste and carbon emissions, the Terra Smart Patch is a smart halochromic film that serves as a food freshness indicator. This innovative product allows consumers to determine the freshness of food without needing to touch or smell it—users simply look at the film on the Terra Smart Patch.

Terra Team’s journey to win the gold medal at the IID 2024 was not easy. They faced numerous challenges from the preparation stage through to the final competition. “There were several obstacles, such as time constraints and some materials not arriving on time. Additionally, the limited availability of equipment in the laboratory presented its own challenges,” explained a student from UNAIR’s Faculty of Fisheries and Marine Sciences.

Putri believes that the Terra Smart Patch product has great potential for further development. Currently, the team is focused on registering copyrights, patents, and trademarks for their product. Furthermore, Terra Team is planning to commercialize their product and seek supporting sponsorships.
