UNAIR NEWS - Introducing the industrial world, Directorate of Career Development, Entrepreneurship Incubation and Alumni (DPKKA ) Universitas Airlangga (UNAIR ) held a webinar on Wednesday, September 11, 2020. The webinar entitled “Career in Industry: Opportunities and Challenges” is part of the Airlangga Career and Internship Club (ACIC) series.

This webinar presented PT Allnex Resins Indonesia, which is part of the global Allnex . Established in 1948, Allnex global is a leading resin manufacturer in the world. PT Allnex Resins Indonesia also won the Naker Award 2023 in the Best Company category for its brilliance in improving employee competence, satisfaction and safety.

There were at least 223 UNAIR students and the general public who enlivened the webinar. Head of Sub-Directorate of DPKKA UNAIR, Lastiko Endi Rahmantyo SS MHum, revealed that the webinar aims to deepen students' insights. Especially regarding the differences between challenges in industry and lectures and how to identify opportunities in them.

“Later Mr. Ahmad (resource person and Human Resource (HR) Professional of PT Allnex Resins Indonesia, ed) will provide insight into how to deal with these opportunities and challenges so that they do not become negative things. Instead, it becomes something positive so that it increases the selling point of younger siblings in the industrial world,” said Lastiko in his opening speech.

The Importance of Organizing

In the material discussion session, Swasono explained about the various characters that a leader must have. These characters are grit, collaboration, and the spirit to win. Swasono also urged students to build leadership character since they were in college.

“To be a leader, you must be able to problem solve. To have that skill, you must have experience. Therefore, when you are a student, start organizing. It will also be your plus point when applying to a company,” Swasono said.

Furthermore, Swasono explained about how to manage oneself, work, and team. According to him, a leader must be able to manage himself in facing challenges and failures. Leaders must also be able to manage their work and organize their team.

Career in the Industry
In the main session, Ahmad Subardo S H MKn explained his experience as an HR professional which requires him to interact with various parties from different backgrounds. According to Ahmad, the advantage of a career in industry is the great opportunity to develop and clear career paths from various multidisciplinary sectors.

Ahmad, who studied his master's degree at UNAIR Faculty of Law, emphasized that a career in industry is not as scary as people think. Here, Ahmad shows his experience of being able to recognize various industrial cultures from abroad thanks to his profession in the industrial world. “This (unpleasant experience in the industrial world, ed) always exists, but it is not that scary. If we are positive, then what we experience will always have a positive impact,” Ahmad explained when starting the material.

Surviving in the Industrial World

In the industrial world, Ahmad mentioned the importance of expanding the circle of influence so as not to be carried away by the negative work culture. One of them is by improving general soft skills such as integrity and character, communication skills, and understanding related to the discipline being pursued.

Having good adaptability is also very important in the industrial world. “If we have mastered integrity, before becoming a leader we must be a good follower . After that, we have to be flexible and adaptive,” Ahmad said.

The preparation of these things will bring out the nature of reliability that strengthens character. With this, the opportunity to develop a career becomes greater. Ahmad also explained that reliable people tend to get job offers more easily without having to look for them.
