UNAIR NEWS – Genada Asaika, a student from the Faculty of Humanities, Universitas Airlangga has made an international achievement. She won first place in the 2023 ROK Asian Youth Presentation, held by Jeollabuk-do Center for International Affairs (JBCIA).

“Alhamdulillah, I was able to maintain my achievements while in South Korea. The journey was not easy, and I faced many challenges,” she said.

The challenges

For Genada, joining international competitions was not easy. The language barrier posed as the main challenge that she faced. However, she did not give up and strived to find solutions.

“Apart from the language, the sources of the presentation I used are mostly written in Korean language. Thus, I work with Yuseon Wang to translate the Korean sources into English,” said the outstanding student.

Time management becomes another hurdle. Genada had to divide her time between competition preparation and exam week preparation. Therefore, Genada and Wang conducted online meetings every night to prepare for the competition.

The innovation

Genada’s idea for the ROK Asian Youth Presentation was sparked by the issue of Jakarta being the fastest-sinking city in the future.

“I noticed that it doesn’t solely happen in Jakarta. From our neighboring countries like the Philippines to South Korea are at the same risk [to sink],” she added. Therefore, she and Wang, her teammate from the School of International Studies Jeonbuk National University (JBNU), came up with the idea of “Three Way Strategies to Mitigate the Sinking City Projections in ROK – ASEAN Countries”.

Mitigating the sinking city

To mitigate the sinking city, Genada came up with three strategies, including community resilience, development management, and collaboration with various stakeholders.

Hopefully, with more advanced studies to realize the strategies, those solutions will tackle the problem.

“I hope these strategies we’ve made can be realized in the future with more advanced studies about the sinking city problem,” she said.
