UNAIR NEWS - Universitas Airlangga (UNAIR) alumnus made another proud achievement. Farizal Rizky Muharam, an alumnus of the Faculty of Medicine (FK) UNAIR, successfully passed the Harvard Medical School, Harvard University.

He took the Master Global Health Delivery program to continue his Master's study at Harvard University. Farizal reasoned that the world of health is currently being tested regarding disparities and policies. This gave him the enthusiasm to look at health broadly.

Spilling the Secrets

So how did Farizal get into one of the world's best universities? Check out some tips and tricks he shared with UNAIR News team on Wednesday, June 21, 2020.

The first thing prospective applicants must do is set a goal. According to Farizal, this goal is important to determine the next step.

"We must understand the goals we want to achieve and the impact when we return to Indonesia later. If our reasons are strong, the rest of the process will follow," he says.

The second step is to build a good track record. This good track record will be seen in the curriculum vitae. When compiling a curriculum vitae, Farizal suggests focusing on the field you want to study at Harvard University.

"I focus on health policy. So what I highlighted was my organizational experience, volunteering, and internships. I also included research experience related to public policy," he explained.

He also added that you should always discuss and build a good relationship with your lecturers. One of the requirements that prospective Harvard University students must fulfill is a letter of recommendation. This letter can be issued by the workplace agency or lecturer during the study.

"When dealing with lecturers, I discuss and build a good relationship with them. So if you ask for a recommendation, it will be easier and less confusing," he added.

English Language Skills

Equally important is English language ability. Each person's difficulty in the components of English ability is different. Farizal revealed that he had difficulties in the writing and speaking components. However, this did not become a significant obstacle because he was present in an environment that supported every process he went through.

"For writing, I try to write papers. For speaking, I practiced with friends to train my speaking skills and discussion," he said.

Currently, taking an English proficiency test is quite easy. People can use an English proficiency test application that is free to access. The cost is also cheaper. Some world campuses, including Harvard University, have allowed prospective students to use this application.

"Tests through applications are just as difficult as tests in general. It's just that the cost is cheaper and can be done anywhere," he said.

The LPDP scholarship recipient advised the community to dream as high as possible. He is optimistic that the ability of Indonesian people is not inferior to other countries. "Indonesian children are not inferior to people from other countries. If we dream, then find a way. Don't forget to pray and ask for your parents' blessing," he concluded. (*)
