UNAIR Master’s student receives research scholarship to Australia Monday, 31 July 2023 14:39

UNAIR NEWS – Another Universitas Airlangga student just made another achievement. Baso Ilham, a Chemistry student of Master’s program has been announced as one of the recipients of a research scholarship at the Australian National University (ANU).

The Future Research Talent (FRT) scholarship program aims to accommodate highly competent awardees to conduct collaborative visits and research across various disciplines at ANU.

Rigorous selection process
To UNAIR NEWS, Ilham explained two stages of rigorous selection he went through, which include research documentation and interviews. “For the university level, there are selection processes to assess research suitability with the program’s scheme and interview. Then, ten UNAIR candidates will undergo selection by ANU,” he said.

From the five recommended candidates in the student and staff categories respectively, the scholarship provider accepts one candidate from each category. As a result, the scholars are expected to have competencies that align with the research areas offered by ANU. This year, the available research fields for collaboration are in science, health, and medicine.

Scope of scholarship
Ilham conducts collaborative research in Australia, which is fully funded by the provider for 12 weeks. It covers the funding for collaborative research, round-trip airfare, visa, medical expenses, and travel insurance, including accommodation and living expenses of the scholarship recipient.

Ilham sees this opportunity not only as a chance to visit one of the best universities in Australia but also as a great opportunity to enhance his research skills in his respective field.

“I’m doing research at the College of Science, Research School of Biology, Division of Biomedical Science and Biochemistry. Besides, I have the opportunity to participate in various development programs offered by the Research School of Biology, such as protein modeling and visualization, supercomputer management, seminars, etc.” he said.

Being a delegate from UNAIR, the South Sulawesi-origin student expressed his gratitude and hoped to bring honor to the campus. “I hope to establish international connections and develop strong research skills at the best university in Australia. Hopefully, I will achieve academic excellence and make meaningful contributions to the scientific world,” he added.
