UNAIR NEWS – Since its establishment in 1999, the English Language and Literature study program has been one of the top study programs in Faculty of Humanities, Universitas Airlangga (FIB UNAIR). In 2022, it gained international accreditation from the Foundation for International Business Administration Accreditation (FIBAA) and Excellent-grade national accreditation.

In an exclusive interview with UNAIR NEWS, Dr. Layli Hamida, the Head of the English Language and Literature Study Program, highlighted that obtaining international accreditation for UNAIR’s English Literature was challenging. The implementation of an international curriculum was a crucial factor in achieving this accreditation.

“One of the criteria is the availability of transdisciplinary courses. Our offers courses that focus on student development. We hope that UNAIR’s English Literature students will be hired by both multinational and national companies,” she said.

Student exchange opportunities
The lecturer elaborated that the English Language and Literature program provides extensive opportunities for student exchanges, both domestically and globally. They consistently send their top-performing students to participate in exchange programs.

This year, the English Language and Literature study program sent five of its students to Europe and the US through the Indonesian International Student Mobility Awards (IISMA) program. Additionally, it offers a joint class for students.

“The joint class allows students to learn with partner universities. Students can participate in Zoom sessions to receive lectures from partner universities, and we occasionally invite partner university speakers to teach our students,” she added.

Dr. Laily went on to explain that the opportunities are open for academic staff and lecturers as well. The English Language and Literature study program has established a vast network with renowned universities in several countries. The network opens up opportunities for collaborative research and joint publications.

“It’s our commitment to improving international opportunities and standards for all members of the academic community,” she said.

Broad career path
The English Language and Literature study program provides a broad career path for students, including allowing students to conduct internships at the Embassy and national and multinational companies.

This support has yielded fruitful results. Alumni of the English Language and Literature program at UNAIR are spread across various fields, including the creative industry, ministries, and renowned companies in Indonesia, making it a promising study program.

“Several of our alumni have obtained jobs with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, with several serving as Branch Heads in Thailand, while others work in the creative industry as copywriters, social media specialists, and content writers,” she said.

Furthermore, she hoped that the study program can maintain its achievements, both for students and educators. So the study program can compete with other disciplines.

“As the head of the study program, I hope that English Language and Literature UNAIR can establish even broader collaborations, both nationally and internationally. Thus, giving more opportunities for students to boost their careers and academic performances,” she emphasized.
