Offering 3-in-1 Diabetes detection, UNAIR team wins Favorite Presentation Award at PIMNAS Friday, 26 April 2024 11:06

UNAIR NEWS – The students of Universitas Airlangga (UNAIR) continue to make various commendable achievements in the most prestigious academic competition, the 36th National Science Week (PIMNAS). UNAIR team clinched the Favorite Presentation Award for their groundbreaking innovation in biomedical engineering.

Under the guidance of Ferry Efendi SKep Ns M Sc PhD, the team consists of Anita Firmanti Kartika (FKp), Aisy Al Fawwaw (FST), Ach Jazilul Qutbi (FTMM), Diaz Samsun Alif (FTMM), and Anasah Zulfah (FKp) as the team leader. They developed Smartose, a 3-in-1 diabetes detection smartwatch.

Raising awareness
Globally, Indonesia stands as one of the countries with the highest diabetes prevalence. Yet, many remain oblivious to the issue, despite the escalating diabetes-related mortality rates.

To address this issue, Anasah and her team introduced a device capable of monitoring blood glucose levels. The smartwatch assists diabetes patients in monitoring their glucose levels regularly and enhances public vigilance through early diabetes detection.

“Smartose is a practical smart device equipped with two main sensors: ECG for glucose and HbA1C detection, and an electrochemical sensor capable of predicting ketones,” explained Anasah.

“Moreover, Smartose is integrated with a mobile application, facilitating users in monitoring their test results,” she continued.

In contrast to traditional glucometers that require skin puncture for blood extraction, Smartose employs a non-invasive technique, ensuring safety and comfort for users.

Challenges
In every competition, obstacles and challenges are inevitable. Differences in academic disciplines, unfamiliarity among team members, and conflicting schedules posed challenges for Anasah in coordinating her team’s progress.

Anasah admitted that despite the joy of securing funding, she has her anxiety in leading her team forward. She had to acquaint herself with fields beyond her expertise and recognize the potential and capabilities of her team members. She shared her story on her team process for the competition.

Firstly, they brainstormed urgent issues. Secondly, they approached problems from different perspectives and formulated innovative solutions. Thirdly, they made proposals, registered, and commenced effectively and in accordance with guidelines. Fourthly, they maintained enthusiasm, consistency, fortified teamwork, and strengthened foundations.

“Strive to progress as efficiently as possible, develop prototypes in PKM KC, progress reports, final reports, logbooks, and follow the guidance provided by the university,” she advised.

Anasah also disclosed that they often practiced presentations and engaged in Q&A sessions, and they won the Favorite Presentation Award. They prepared well-crafted presentation scripts and PowerPoint slides, recognizing that in PIMNAS, evaluation is weighed greatly based on team presentations. Anasah suggested seeking regular consultation and accepting feedback and advice from supervising lecturers.

“PKM is not only about who is the most outstanding, but also about who can endure with high spirits, determination, and consistency,” Anasah stated.
