UNAIR NEWS - Dr. Purwati FINASIM as a lecturer of Faculty of Vocational Studies as well as a researcher of internal medicine experts won the 2024 intellectual property award. The award was presented directly by the Minister of Law and Human Rights on Wednesday, June 12, 2020 at Shangri-La Hotel Jakarta.

The award obtained by Dr. Purwati is a pride as a researcher from UNAIR. Dr Purwati said that the award was assessed by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) as a form of intellectual property registration in the field of inventor research.

Stem Cell Research
Dr. Purwati said that most of the research fields recognized by WIPO both in the form of patents and Intellectual Property Rights are in the scope of stem cells. There are so many research results found in stem cells, ranging from being useful as a cell protector so that cells last longer when outdoors to diabetic wounds.

"Through our research, there are many uses of stem cells for the development of research in the health sector. We are grateful that from 2015 to 2020, we have obtained a total of thirteen patents and Intellectual Property Rights," she said.

Dr. Purwati said that through this research discovery, it is hoped that the existence of stem cells will provide innovation and benefits for people in need. Stem cell research has also been downstreamed in 2023 by integrating with the private sector.

"Actually, I don't know what assessment criteria are used as indicators by WIPO. Frankly, as an inventor's right, it is an exclusive right given to the inventor to the research focus of the researcher," he said.

Challenges as a Researcher
Dr. Purwati revealed that there are several challenges faced during the research process. The challenges range from funding, downstreaming, regulatory adjustments, to marketing for research results to be known by the public.

"I am grateful to UNAIR for providing facilities and even funding for the sustainability of this research. As a researcher, I hope that researchers will do a lot of collaboration with related parties, so that a research can be said to be successful, "he said.

Dr. Purwati gave tips for all UNAIR researchers to write the results obtained from research in the lab. Achieving an award is part of the bonus obtained by researchers. "Mainly to get this award, as a researcher, don't be bored to register your research in patents and Intellectual Property Rights," she concluded.
