Wahyu Dhyatmika, UNAIR Alumnus who Inspires Through Digital Journalism Monday, 05 August 2024 11:03

UNAIR NEWS - Universitas Airlangga (UNAIR) once again proved its quality through one of its alumnus who has successfully occupied an important position in the media industry. It is Anak Agung Gde Bagus Wahyu Dhyatmika, a professional journalist who currently serves as CEO of a leading media, Tempo Digital. The position he has achieved to date cannot be separated from his determination and love for journalism.

The figure who is familiarly called Wahyu is an alumnus of the Faculty of Social and Political Sciences (FISIP) UNAIR. Apart from being a CEO, he is now also active as an activist in the Alliance of Independent Journalists (AJI). At AJI, he continues to fight for independent journalism, press freedom, and the welfare of media industry workers.

Starting as a Campus Journalist
Wahyu began his journey in the academic world by studying at the Communication Science Study Program, FISIP UNAIR. During his college years, Wahyu was known as a student who was active in various campus activities, including journalism.

"In 1997 and 1998, during the student movement era, I was active as a campus journalist. So that was one of the experiences that eventually forged my journalistic skills. It just so happened to match what I learned in college," he said.

After graduating from UNAIR, Wahyu Dhyatmika began his journey as a journalist in Jakarta in 2002. As a Tempo field reporter, he had to move quickly and dynamically, covering news from various locations such as government offices, courts, police stations, and the Parliament building.

"It was an unforgettable experience when I could produce 10 to 15 stories a day on various topics. At that time, it was not difficult because all the sources were in one place, so there was no need to travel around. Just walk a little and meet a member of the House of Representatives, and you'll get a lot of news," Wahyu said.

In 2004, Wahyu continued her education at the University of Westminster, majoring in International Journalism and Media. After completing his studies, Wahyu returned to Tempo and tried to transform the world of digital media.

Innovation and Contribution
Wahyu's career at Tempo continued to grow until he was trusted to lead the media as CEO. Wahyu is committed to maintaining Tempo's independence and journalistic integrity. In addition, he began to develop Tempo as one of the early pioneers of digital media in Indonesia.

"One of the characteristics of digital media is that the public is interactive. We can no longer be one-way. The public must be involved, the public must be active, there is engagement, and the editor must involve the readers," he said.

In addition to his success at Tempo, Wahyu is also active in developing educational innovations through the YouTube channel "Kok Bisa". Wahyu also innovated by developing Tempo Witness, a platform to empower local or marginalized communities in collaboration with various community projects such as Internews' Earth Journalism Network, Hivos, WWF, and others.

With this success, as an alumnus, Wahyu hopes that UNAIR will continue to be a pioneer and symbol of openness. He wants to see UNAIR graduates spread in various sectors and become agents of change in every field they work in.

"Continue to be a place of learning that is fun, inclusive, open, not dogmatic. The best campus is the one that provides opportunities for students to learn and make mistakes," Wahyu concluded.
